Long Story Short – Sean Priester – Creating Great Food while Making a Difference in the Community

This week on Long Story Short, Leslie Wilcox talks story with Sean Priester, executive chef and owner of Soul Café in Kaimuki. From his childhood in a military family, Sean learned to respect the communities where life and duty led them. With this mindset, paired with his culinary talent, Sean launched Soul Café, where he demonstrates how food can nurture community and supports others in overcoming personal adversity.

Among his volunteer work is a partnership with Next Step Shelter, where he prepares food for the homeless. Sean also opens up about his past internal struggles, which manifested as drug and alcohol addiction, beginning in his college years at North Carolina State. Fifteen years later, Sean talks about overcoming his vices and fears, and helping others do the same through the power of food.

Long Story Short – Bill Paty – Helping to Conserve Hawaii’s Natural Environment

Bill Paty has a life story that spans nine decades of personal and Hawaii history. Many residents probably remember Paty as the state land director during Governor John Waihee’s administration. In the 1970s, Paty presided over the historic Constitutional Convention and later served as chairman of the State Board of Land and Natural Resources, where he had the chance to fulfill his dream of helping to conserve Hawaii’s natural environment for future generations. Now, at age 90, Bill Paty talks with Leslie Wilcox about all this and how he remains actively involved in business, environmental, military and non-profit endeavors.

Long Story Short – Thomas Kaulukukui Jr. – On Leadership

Thomas Kaulukukui Jr.’s career of public service was inspired by the examples set by his family who were teachers and coaches in the community. The values they imparted helped shape Thomas Jr.’s character and served him well in the jungles of Vietnam, in the classroom and football field and in the role of Circuit Court Judge. He is now the managing trustee of the Queen Liliuokalani Trust which assists orphaned and destitute children of Hawaiian ancestry. After serving in a variety of leadership capacities, Thomas Kaulukukui Jr. is now on a mission to help foster discipline and scholarship and to instill the core values of Hawaiian culture required by future leaders in the Native Hawaiian community.

Long Story Short – Thomas Kaulukukui Jr. – A Legacy of Public Service

Thomas Kaulukukui Jr.’s dedication to public service was inspired by the examples set by his parents, aunts and uncles who were teachers, counselors and coaches in the community. His father, Thomas Senior, was an educator, United States Marshal and an Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee. He was also a standout college athlete and the University of Hawaii’s first All-American football player. As an athletic coach he left an indelible mark on hundreds of young men and was a prime motivating force behind his own son’s positive approach towards tackling the challenges that life had to offer.

Korean Immigrant Christine Camp rose from poverty to create her own development company, the Avalon Group, of which she is President and CEO. Leslie Wilcox talks with Christine about the struggles of adjusting to America and growing up with “tough love” from her mother, which led to her running away from home at age 15. Christine also discusses working for several well-known companies where she gained the experience to launch her own business.
