Leslie Wilcox talks story with Sig Zane, a Hilo fashion designer who’s been in the business for over 25 years. Sig originally considered careers in architecture, law and real estate before discovering Hawaiian culture and fashion design in the 1970s, when he moved to the Big Island. Sig is one of the first designers to incorporate native Hawaiian plant imagery into his clothing designs, a reflection of his strong affinity for and commitment to Hawaiian culture.

Making films that allow Hawaiian history to speak is an enterprise that enriches viewers without making Eddie and Myrna Kamae rich. On Long Story Short, Myrna tells how, way back when, they’d saved $20,000 for a home down-payment. Eddie asked his business-savvy spouse if they could use the money to support the next film project. She agreed without question. To this day, they don’t own their home, but still rent the same three-room Waikiki apartment.

On this episode of Long Story Short, Leslie Wilcox talks with Ty Sanga, an up and coming filmmaker. After leaving a career in the visitor industry, Sanga struggled to find the right calling to share and convey Hawaii’s unique culture. The University of Hawaii ethnic studies program introduced him to the power of film documentaries to communicate a personal vision.
Sanga is a graduate of the UH Academy for Creative Media and received his MFA from Chapman University. His Hawaiian language film Stones was recently honored by the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in 2011. His graceful depiction of a Hawaiian legend illustrates his authentic voice and visual style.

Leslie Wilcox talks story with Hawaiian Renaissance man Solomon Enos. The muralist, painter, book illustrator, comic strip creator, educator, and futuristic storyteller is also the groundskeeper for the forest preserve in the back of Kalihi Valley – the site of Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services. Enos draws inspiration from the land and considers it a “sentient” that must nurtured the way one nurtures a family member. Enos also talks about developing his Honolulu Advertiser comic strip Polyfantastica into a graphic novel.
